Climbers Raise Funds For Stewardship Efforts at Rumbling Bald Climbing Area
By Kayah Gaydish
On January 15, 2014 over 150 rock climbers gathered for a fundraising event at Black Dome
Mountain Sports in Asheville, NC. The goal was to raise $3,000 for the Carolina Climbers
Coalition (CCC) and Friends of Chimney Rock State Park’s stewardship efforts at Rumbling Bald
Climbing Area at Chimney Rock State Park. Any money over that amount would be given to to
the American Alpine Club’s (AAC) Live Your Dream grant program.
Participants at the event enjoyed food and beverages, as well as a silent auction, raffle prizes, a
slide show and presentation by professional rock climber, Pat Goodman. Many climbers traveled
far to attend this event on a Wednesday night, some as many as five hours. Comments were made
about this being the greatest social event rock climbers have had in many years, as well as interest
to make it an annual event. Through the silent auction, small entrance fee, and raffle tickets, over
$4,400 were raised!
From the funds raised, a check for $3,000 was presented to Chimney Rock State Park
Superintendent, James Ledgerwood on behalf of the Friends of Chimney Rock State Park, CCC,
and AAC. The money will be spent on trail improvements at Rumbling Bald, and climbers will
volunteer to do the work needed. In addition to climbers being great stewards of the land, through
volunteerism at trail days, they have also come to the table through fundraising efforts to further
facilitate improvements at Chimney Rock State Park.
