Washington DC Section Events

Section Meeting – 7pm Thursday August 22 – Alaskan Climbing in the Ruth Gorge

Next section meeting will be in the second floor meeting room at the Cleveland Park Neighborhood

Library, 3310 Connecticut Ave N.W. Washington, DC 20008.

DC climbers & AAC members Rob Graver and Mike Baur will talk about their recent ascents of the Ham and Eggs

Couloir (V AI4 5.9) and Shaken Not Stirred (V AI5 M5 5.8), both on the Moose’s Tooth (10, 300 ft) in the Ruth

Gorge, Alaska.

Since its first ascent in 1975 by a party that included Jon Krauker (Into Thin Air), the Ham and Eggs Couloir has

become an entrance exam for aspiring Alaskan alpinists. Shaken Not Stirred has also become a neo-classic since

its ascent in 1997 by Jim Donini and Greg Crouch.

With ski plane access with a few hundred yards of these routes, there’s no need to go hiking with climbing gear….

the descents are rappelling the route, so these routes offer good climbing but not serious commitment.

As we have to vacate the library by 8.30 this evening will start promptly at 7pm. http://,%20DC%20%2020008

Nearest metro is Cleveland Park, several blocks away. After the meeting, we will head to a nearby bar.

Columbus Day Weekend Climbing Meet – Seneca Rocks October 11-14

Over the weekend of Columbus Day (October 11-14) there will be a joint AAC meet involving three

sections – Washington DC, Mid Atlantic (PA, DE, NJ) and Southern Appalachian (NC). DC Section will be

acting as host, with assistance from the other AAC sections, and also from the Gendarme (Diane Kearns)

and Seneca Guides (Tom Cecil).

As Columbus Day is a Federal holiday, this will be held over three days. Details will follow shortly, but in

addition to meeting and climbing with other AAC members, there will be AAC speakers on Saturday and

Sunday, with a barbecue and breakfasts provided in exchange for a modest registration fee. Camping is

likely to be at Seneca Shadows.

To be successful, this event will need volunteers to assist with various aspects of the

weekend. In particular, given the difficulty visitors have finding routes at Seneca, we’re particularly

looking for DC members who can climb with and/or help AAC members from other sections find climbs.

We’re also looking for potential speakers who have been interesting places. The format will be 3 talks per

night, 2 nights, around 30 min each….and we have a film lined up already. So we need another 5 AAC

members who’d like to share their experiences with the participants.

Planning this event depends on an accurate count of participants, so there will be a registration

process with the usual liability waiver stuff set up shortly. In the meantime, if you are interested

in participating or in volunteering, I’d like to hear from you sooner rather than later….Simon Carr,

GORETEX/AAC Peek Event Wed – Silver Spring Civic Center Oct 2

The event is a meeting of the minds; a social gathering, and an opportunity to sneak peek GORETEX’s

latest product as well as learn more about the AAC and other local organizations. We will be reaching to

the wider outdoor community to participate and to encourage their members to attend.

The event will take place at the Silver Spring Civic Center (i.e. DC) on Oct. 2 and will have wine, beer,

and light food, a dj in the background, and three local presenters talking about their experiences; folks

will be encouraged to walk around and visit the climbing organizations’ booths, and participate in GORETEX’s interactive product demos.

Silver Spring Civic Centre is 1 Veterans Pl, Silver Spring, MD ‎
