In response to recent climbing accidents in North Carolina, the American Alpine Club
Southern Appalachian Section has developed the first of a series of free sixty minute
clinics that will review safe climbing practices.
Nearly half of all climbing accidents occur when descending from a climb. Most of
these accidents involve rappelling. Many of these accidents are fatal. Nearly all
We invite you to join the AAC for a free one hour clinic reviewing rappelling best
practices. The clinic is taught by American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA)
certified guides. The content is based upon The Know Your Ropes material published
in the 2012 Accidents in North American Mountaineering.
This is not an “how to rappel” class. It is not appropriate for individuals with no
rappelling experience. It is intended for climbers with some experience rappelling who
want to ensure that they are current in their understanding of safe rappelling protocols
All attendees will receive a FREE AAC Rappelling Best Practices t shirt.
You are encouraged to attend and bring along your climbing friends. AAC membership
is not required.
Contact David Thoenen at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information on clinic content,
registration and a list of suggested equipment to bring to the clinic.
Please also provide your t shirt size.
The AAC is interested in offering this clinic at other locations across
North Carolina. Please contact David if you are interested in helping
bring the clinic to a venue near you.
