AAC Green Mountain Book Club UPDATE

Posted on: June 4th, 2012 by Northeast Region

Update from AAC Green Mountain Book Club organizer Greg Glade:

May wrap-up

We had a great May meeting where we discussed Bernadette McDonald’s ‘Freedom Climbers’, a terrific book which everyone appeared to enjoy reading. We had several readings of different sections which I’d like to see us continue at forthcoming meetings. One theme we talked about was the recurrence of ‘the third man’ in several areas of the book. This brought to my mind a book on that very subject. I was going to pass this on to Steve Ratcliff but will share it here for all:

Geiger, John. The Third Man Factor: Surviving the Impossible. 2009 US, 1st, 8vo, pp.xiv, 299, blue/white cloth

An interesting book discussing how people at the very edge of death often sense an unseen presence beside them who encourages them to make one final effort to survive. Studies include the experiences of Ann Bancroft, Hermann Buhl, Greg Child, Parash Das, Kurt Diemberger, Peter Hillary, Reinhold Messner, Ernest Shackleton, Frank Smythe, Tony Streather, Robert Swan, Rob Taylor, Jim Wickwire, Maurice Wilson, and others. This book was a finalist at the 2010 Banff Mountain Book Festival.

June date

Our June meeting is scheduled for:

Thursday June 21st, 7pm, Carpenter Carse Library, Hinesburg (this is a different date from my last mailing as some folks had a conflict with the 28th)

We have a trilogy on tap consisting of the following. Feel free to read any or all!

Jon Krakauer – Into Thin Air

Anatoli Boukreev – The Climb

Goran Kropp – Ultimate High

I still have one $5 copy of ITA and one $12 copy of The Climb if anyone is interested.

July selection

For July, date TBD, we have selected Felice Benuzzi’s ‘No Picnic on Mount Kenya’. This is in print and available from Amazon or used copies can be found online via ABEbooks.

Cheers, Greg
