Big News in Patagonia
We’d be remiss if we didn’t comment on the historic climb completed by AAC Member (and 2011 Bates Award Winner) Hayden Kennedy, along with his partner Jason Kruk. Hayden and Kruk, though details are still fuzzy, have apparently completed the first “fair means” ascent of Cerro Torre’s Southeast Ridge. This route has been a flashpoint in the climbing ethics debate since hundreds of bolts were placed with a compressor on an early attempt. Over the years, bolts have been added and chopped, but the Compressor Route remains.
This new effort is a long coveted prize, and the AAC offers its sincerest congratulations to these two amazing young alpinists! We look forward to hearing the full story and sharing the report in the 2012 American Alpine Journal.
Read more on the climb over at Alpinist and stay tuned for updates.
As the 2011 Robert Hicks Bates Awardee, Hayden sent us this thank you video.
