A Letter from Jeff—Our New Western Regional Coordinator

Posted on: January 17th, 2012 by Luke Bauer

My name is Jeff  Deikis and I would like to introduce myself as the new Southwest
Regional Coordinator with the American Alpine Club. I want to take this opportunity
to tell you about my background and highlight a couple of exciting new things that I see
happening with the AAC in the Southwest Region this year.

A little about myself: I grew up in the Midwest—in Southeastern Michigan outside of
Detroit. To escape the cornfields, my parents and I would take trips to Colorado where I
learned to ski and scramble around in the Rocky Mountains at a young age. Later, while
attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, I made frequent trips to the Red
River Gorge in Kentucky, the New River Gorge in West Virginia, and Rumney in New
Hampshire—the places I credit with having taught me how to climb. After graduating I
moved to the Southwest and have since lived in South Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Flagstaff,
and, where I currently make my home, amongst the juggernaut boulders of Bishop,
California.

As a new team member to The American Alpine Club I am looking forward to an
exciting year. It is my goal to see the AAC community grow and become more active
through an increase of social gatherings such as slideshows and parties, conservation
projects, climbing events, and climbing festivals. As our region grows, I hope to see a
strong support base of volunteers to help us reach our goals and, ultimately, increased
partnerships with other, more localized climbing organizations. Working together I know
we can extend the reach of the Club’s message in the Southwest, expand our membership
base, and ultimately provide increased support for the greater climbing community while
helping to conserve the environment we all love to play in.

    Jeff

I am from the Northeast Region where Sara Garlick is our Coordinator. I think you folks are doing a fantastic job to support climbing. I am an older climber, just retired from work but ambitious about climbing, so I appreciate the network. I am traveling across country next week and I am thinking of stopping to hike/climb Humphrey’s Peak. I’d love to talk to someone local about it. Can you make a suggestion? By the way, I grew up in southeastern Michigan too! Berkley? I’ve been in NYC for the last 30 years.
