Donner Summit Climb-munity
When: Jun 25, 2010
Join us for free camping and a Saturday evening barbeque with beer, wine and a campfire on the beautiful undeveloped property of SNS member Bela Vadasz of Alpine Skills International. It’s right on top of Donner Pass, within easy walking distance of the superb granite crags. $10 for climbers under 29 years old, $15 for AAC members, $20 for non-members. Everyone is welcome, so invite your friends! An RSVP is required so we have a head count for the amount of supplies we need to purchase (email: [email protected]). Here are the details:
LOCATION: We will camp off Lake Mary Road just Southwest of and adjacent to the old ASI lodge (now Sugar Bowl Academy). It’s right on top of Donner Pass on the South side of Old Highway 40. So if you’re coming up the pass from the West, turn right immediately before the Sugar Bowl Academy parking lot, and if you’re coming up from the East, turn left immediately after that parking lot. Parking will be along Lake Mary Road. Don’t park in the Academy’s lot. We’ll have some small signs up. If you need more detailed directions just email or call (contact info below). Tent/bivi sites are scattered about a 25 to 50m walk from the road.
GROUP GEAR / FACILITIES: SNS will provide: a Wag Bag toilet system with privacy tent at the site, some community water containers, a large folding table for the food, a group shelter if needed (perhaps for wind). Bring your own: tent, chair, other camping gear, breakfast and lunch food, some water, climbing gear, and good cheer.
SCHEDULE: Friday June 25 through Sunday June 27. Arrive Friday evening (or whenever), climb Saturday and Sunday. Feel free to join us for the whole deal or just one day or just the party or whatever you can do. We’ll be at the site from about 7 PM on Friday (maybe earlier). We don’t climb as a big organized group; rather you can partner up if needed and head off on your own. Anyone needing a partner or beta on where/what to climb will find it from our group. We can walk to most of the climbs, and there are fantastic routes for all abilities. Saturday evening drinks and barbeque will start around 7.
PARTY: Again, Saturday evening around 7. SNS will provide a grill, campfire supplies, and beer and wine and munchies. Bring your own grillables for the barbeque or other main course for Saturday evening dinner.
RELEASE: Please note: CLIMBING IS ON YOUR OWN AND NOT ORGANIZED, LEAD OR GUIDED BY THE AAC OR THE EVENT ORGANIZERS. You are required to sign a liability release form provided by the AAC in order to climb and camp with us. RSVP and we can get the release to you ahead of time instead of bothering you with it at the event. Please review, sign and bring it with you. Note that your signature must be witnessed (but not notarized). We’ll also have some blank copies.
COST: $10 for climbers under 29 years old (AAC member or not), $15 for AAC members, $20 for non-members. I can’t really prorate it if you’re just coming for one day, but let’s talk if that’s an issue, because we want as many folks to attend whatever parts they can. Cash is preferred, but we’ll also take a check made payable to the American Alpine Club.
