Past President Sends New Mixed Line in NH
Past AAC president Mark Richey and member Freddie Wilkinson completed the first integral ascent of a new mixed line on Cannon Cliff, Franconia, New Hampshire. The pair rated the, as yet unnamed, four and half pitch route M6+ ‘Spicy’. Wilkinson had attempted the line with local AMGA guide Bayard Russel but were shut down at the top of the third pitch. Russel, unavailable due to a busy guiding schedule, was unable to give it another go this season, so Richey joined Wilkinson for the second attempt. Richey said the climb was “a nice natural line that follows a distinct series of steep corners just to the right of the popular winter ice climb Omega. The climbing was typical of Cannon mixed climbing in winter; slabby, insecure and scary at times but very satisfying. All gear was placed on the lead and no bolts were used.” Thanks to Pat Bagley for filming and posting the video on his blog.
In this clip Mark Richey tackles the crux pitch; a stemming corner with in-obvious and dubious protection.
