The Cassin Ridge: 1961 Photos!
In 1961, after the historic first ascent of the striking rib splitting Denali’s south face, perhaps America’s finest alpine climb, the Italian expedition led by Riccardo Cassin sent an album of photos to Bradford Washburn, who had helped the climbers plot their route with his super-detailed aerial photos. Washburn, in turn, donated these photos to the American Alpine Club Library. Cassin died this year at age 100, but you can see the photos from his famous expedition at the AAC Library’s Flick’r page. These images open a remarkable window into the clothing, equipment, and climbing style of a landmark climb from nearly 50 years ago.
