AAC Southern Appalachian Section Donates To Steele Crag Purchase By SECC

Posted on: September 1st, 2009 by Southern Appalachian Section

The Southern Appalachian Section of the American Alpine Club donated $100 to the Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC)  towards the purchase of a crag at Steele, AL. The SECC has a contract for a 25 acre tract for a portion of the cliffline at Steele. This area has been closed to climbers since 1987 due to private land owner access issues. The Steele cliffline is located 7 miles from Horsepens and 45 minutes from Birmingham. The tract has 1,400 linear feet of cliffline and includes several cliff areas and it is estimated to have 30 to 50 routes.  Max Poppel, AAC Ambassador in Chattanooga, sponsored the proposal for the AAC donation.
